From the Executive Director
When the Board of Tri State Educational Foundation awards a scholarship it may vary from a few hundred dollars to buy books for one semester to several thousand dollars for several semesters. These funds are what we call restricted cash or obligated, money that is awarded and represents a Long-Term Liability. These funds are then moved into a special scholarship account for the use of each successful applicant until it is used up or their program is concluded for one reason or another. Again restricted cash represents funds designated for individual scholarships, which have been granted by the Foundation, but are not currently due. Subject to routine performance requirements, the Foundation will dispense these funds to the institution that the student is enrolled as they become due. The routine requirements for students to remain on scholarship with the Foundation are nominal. They must maintain a C average, or better, with no failures at the end of each semester. It is the students responsibility to provide the Foundation with a copy of their semester grades.
The Foundations goal is to reach people that have a desire to continue their education but do not have the means financially. Scholarship assistance has been awarded to students who want to study to become such members of their communities as mechanics, law enforcement people, doctors, nurses, educators, lawyers, artist, technicians, ministers, child care workers, scientist, accountants, and coaches. We are accomplishing our goal. As of April 2008, we have awarded over 1,100 scholarships. These scholarships total $4.2 million dollars. Our restricted scholarship funds at this time totals approximately $900,000 dollars. These funds are in the special scholarship account for the exclusive use of the students on active scholarship assistance at this time. These funds will be exhausted in the next two to four years but will remain in this account no matter the fate of the Foundation. As existing scholarships are exhausted, new scholarships are awarded.
If you know of someone who needs help, please let them know about us or let us know about them and we'll make the contact. I am proud to be a part of this foundation and of the board members for their generosity and commitment to improving and providing educational means to communities.
Sincerely,
Shawn Phelps, Executive Director
